Emily’s story: finding meaningful work at YSAS

YSAS Worker

For a long time, Emily Coronel thought she’d stay in hospitality. As a single mother of three, the idea of finding a more meaningful career felt out of reach. “I just kind of fell into hospitality at a young age, but then I got over it,” she says. Eventually, she decided to study a Diploma of Community Services, which led her to a placement at YSAS Dandenong.

Emily joined the Youth Support Service, which helps young people involved in the criminal justice system find a better path. “I think one reason I’m so drawn to crime prevention is because I have a lot of lived experience as a young person,” she says.

During her placement, Emily gained broad experience – from direct work with young people to training in youth-specific family violence and the Risks-Needs-Responsivity Model

“It was a really good learning experience, and the staff and environment were so lovely and welcoming,” she says.

Balancing placement, full-time study, and parenting was no small feat. “It was seven days a week, either TAFE, placement, or weekend work,” she recalls. “It was extremely challenging, but very worth it.”

Emily enjoyed her placement so much that she soon secured a full-time position at YSAS Dandenong. She now works in the Crime Prevention Intake and Assessment Team, and also supports the Operation Newstart Casey ‘Re-Engage’ program – a personal development and mental health initiative for young people at risk of disengaging from education.

Her work has been deeply rewarding. She recalls supporting one young person who began their journey isolated and disconnected. Together, they organised Centrelink support, reconnected them with school and friends, and helped rebuild confidence. “She was so closed off and low in mood at the start,” Emily says. “Then towards the end, she seemed so much brighter and happier. She just seemed so much better.”

Emily’s passion for crime prevention has only grown since joining YSAS. “It’s really important that young people aren’t labelled as criminals – that they know there are other options out there,” she says. She tailors her approach to each young person.

“Some young people really benefit from a straightforward approach, while others need time to build a relationship with you.”

Emily encourages other students to consider doing their placement with YSAS. “You’ll absolutely love it,” she says.
