Invasion Day: Amplifying their message

Disclaimer: As a settler on this land, my intention is not to speak over Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices, but to amplify their message.

For those who may not know “Australia Day” can be a difficult and exhausting day for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, because January 26th (1788) was the day that the first English fleet arrived and began the genocide of indigenous people on this land. To many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander folks the celebration of “Australia Day” symbolises the celebration of cultural genocide – deeply distressing. As a service dedicated to supporting all young people it is important to be supportive of first nation young people and their future as well.

Here are some ways that you can show your support:

  • Attend the Invasion Day rally – the most effective way to show your support is to show up!

10.30am, 26th January at Parliament House, Spring Street Melbourne (or rallies in your area)

  • Pay the rent – Donate to Indigenous lead collectives and organisations. https://paytherent.net.au/
  • Educate yourself – There is a wealth of online resources about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

In solidarity.

REMEMBER: If you choose to go to the rally stay safe – wear a mask, take and use hand sanitiser, physical distance 1.5 metres from others, drink water, wear sunscreen and a hat.
